Security Software
- Anti-Virus Software - protects your computer against known viruses. It may be able to identify and remove a virus before any damage is done. As with all software it is important to keep your Anti-Virus up to date.
- Firewall Software - can help prevent remote access and infections by blocking certain incoming and outgoing network traffic.
-
Passwords
- Use passwords that are not actual words (there are large database lists on the Internet that hackers can use to crack passwords that appear in the dictionaries, try and use a mixture of letters and numbers).
- By using different passwords for different sites and programs, if one of your passwords is compromised then a hacker is limited to only that account.
- Do not select options to ‘remember your password' when logging on to sites or programs.
-
General
- Keep all your software up to date. Software manufacturers will release patches and updates in response to vulnerabilities identified in their software. If the software is set to update automatically, ensure these updates are happening.
